Information on Alpacas

Centuries from now when historians look back on the 20th century they will analyze how man interacted with his natural environment. The native cultures of South America have, for centuries lived in harmony with the Alpacas, Llamas, Vicunas and Guanacos, using the animals to benefit their survival in the harsh environment of the Andes. It is a beautiful example of perfect compatibility between man and his environment.

Until quite recently, Alpacas were relatively unknown outside of their native land in South America. Today, alpacas are becoming established in North America and many people are interested in owning these charming, charismatic creatures which are known for their gentle nature and luxurious, silky fibre.

Worldwide demand for Alpacas and their luxury fibre has sustained their high value. They are a delight to be with and offer an investment diversification that can give you a handsome return.

ALPACA CHARACTERISTICS

  • Alpacas are the smallest of the domesticated camelids, standing an average of 4 feet at the top of the head and weighing approximately 130 - 190 pounds.
  • Alpacas are prized for their soft fine fibre which comes in twenty-two different shades from white to ivory and champagne, from fawn to dark chocolate brown, from light gray to black.
  • Alpacas, a social herd animal prefer the company of their own kind. Their gentle nature makes them easy to handle.
  • Alpacas are hardy and adaptable. They are low maintenance easy keepers. They require a few acres of grazing pasture, a sturdy fence to keep them safe from predators, a shelter for adverse weather conditions and a good water supply,
  • Alpacas are shorn in spring for their luxurious, silky soft, warm and valuable fleece, giving them enough time to grow back coverage to go through the next winter in comfort.
  • Female alpacas are generally ready for breeding between 1 and 2 years of age. Alpacas are induced ovulators which means that they ovulate after breeding. If not pregnant, a mature female is almost constantly receptive to breeding.
  • Males mature more slowly and typically begin breeding at 2 to 3 years of age.
  • A single baby (cria) is born after a gestation of about 11 months and is weaned at 6 months.
